Reform UK are opposed to building on the Green Belt in all but the most exceptional of circumstances, as we clearly stated during the 2026 local election campaign. We were therefore dismayed to read in the draft London Plan, just released by Labour Greater London Mayor Sadiq Khan, that 5,600 homes are proposed for the Green Belt in Croydon. Most, if not all, are intended for the Gravel Hill and New Addington areas.
Croydon’s Executive Mayor has already stated that he will oppose that aspect of the draft London Plan and we are fully supportive of him in this matter. As Reform UK’s Councillors in Croydon both represent New Addington South we clearly have a special interest in protecting our residents from any such developments.
We have already identified a flaw in the logic behind the draft plan. To be considered as a Broad Location for Growth (BLG) within the Green Belt, an area must have a well-connected train station within it, or a short bus ride away. To include the Addington area as a BLG, the draft London Plan treats tram stops as train stations, which they clearly are not. They are not part of the National Rail network and trams do not travel as nearly as fast as trains. Most passengers travelling any reasonable distance from New Addington would most likely switch to a train at East or West Croydon. If the trams are treated as buses and not trains, then the criteria for making the Gravel Hill and New Addington area a BLG is not met.
New Addington residents can be assured that their Reform UK Councillors will do all in their power to protect the open nature of the surrounding land for this and future generations.
